The Educational Project „Dekalog 89+”

Literary-cinematic competition
organised by
Foundation „Institute for the Promotion of Education”
and Publishing House Operon

The Educational Project „Dekalog89+” is an idea to give the Polish youth an opportunity to say something about their dilemmas and worries. By inviting young people to this competition we would like to provoke them to reflect on their moral values. The honourable patronage was given by Maria Kieślowska, Krzysztof Piesiewicz – the senator of the parliament and Archbishop Józef Życiński.

The competition consists of two stages:

  1. Literary – it's a competition for pupils of high schools for the best short story inspired by Decalogue. Entries will be judged by Jury: Stefan Chwin – chairman, Zygmunt Miłoszewki, Darek Dikti.
  2. Cinematic – it's a competition for students of the last two years of academic education and graduates of director and cameraman studies for best adapted scenario based on short stories from the first stage of the project. Winners will have a chance to change their scenarios into short story movies (about 10'.) on 16 mm camera. Entries will be judged by Rada Artystyczna (Artistic Council): Wojciech Marczewski – chairman, Michał Rosa, Andrzej Mańkowski and Darek Dikti.
This stage of the project was designed to give young artists an important professional experience, opening for them the way to a feature film debut.
The fact that the year 2009 is the 20th anniversary of „Decalogue” by Krzysztof Kieślowski is a contributory factor to the project.

Presented below is a description of assumptions for realization of „Dekalog89+”:

First stage:

  1. Competition for the best short story was announced in high schools in Poland in September 2007.
  2. Every short story has to be related to one of the Ten Commandments.

  4. Attractive awards are waiting for the winners of the competition: 10 major awards with prize money and many distinctions with gifts.
  5. The teachers who helped the awarded pupils will also be awarded the same prizes.

Second stage:

  1. The date of announcing the competition of film adaptations is anticipated in the middle of March 2008.
  2. 10-15 minutes-long films will be admitted for the competition.
